Our season got off to a good start with the brunch at Tucker's, which Anne Sallows was kind enough to write up for us. There was a good mix of "stories" from snow birders and stay at homers', so we are off and running on the one–up-man ship trail. Should make for some good campfire discussions.
On another note, we have a problem coming up that no one likes to hear but cannot be avoided, that of club finances. Just like the cost of fuel, the cost of running the club continue to increase - paper, ink cartridges, postage, etc, and we have held the dues steady for quite a number of years. This year we are forecasting a deficit of close to $10.00 a rig, and would like to find ways to avoid this. More people getting their newsletter by email, 50/50 draws at the campouts, anything to help would be considered. So put on your thinking caps, as this will be tabled at our first meeting in May. And anyone not coming to Ottawa, my email, phone number and address are in the roster, any suggestion would be welcome and considered.
Looking forward to seeing people in Ottawa.

As
reported by Anne Sallows:
Sunny blue skies welcomed our members to the
first outing for 2008 at Tucker's Marketplace in Burlington,
Ontario. Good food and great conversation were the order of the day;
many telling of their winter woes while others told of their experiences in the
South. Shortly after two, most were on their way with great expectations
for another year of friendship and fun.
Attendees were: Bart, Beardsall, Binks,
Ellis, Gale, Holborn, Miles, Quinton, David Rung, Ruppel, Sallows, Toldi,
Ted Van Kesteren, Watkins, and Wicks
It’s almost time for our first
outing of the Season. Tuesday May 20th
– 24th, 2008 at Richmond
Fairgrounds, Richmond, Ontario. Be sure to have a good look at the Flyer
enclosed as there are a couple of small changes since it was handed out at the
Brunch. One is a change in the
directions and the other is that the activity fee needs to be in cash.
As this is a visit to our Nations Capital it sure would be
nice if there were some pictures of the group to submit to the W.I.T
Magazine. Unfortunately, Bob and I won’t
be there so we are relying on members submissions for the Web-Site as
well. There is a wonderful program in
place so go and enjoy!
Bruce Binks had a bit of a scare while travelling home from
a weekend away with his family that necessitated medical attention. Turns out they were sound warnings (TIA’s)
but he was given clearance to enjoy the winter in Florida.
Corienne Bart under went surgery on her second knee with
great success.
Irene Toldi
had her second hip replacement and went off to Florida to recuperate.
Jim and Mary Jane Pickersgill sold up their home and are
living fulltime in their coach.
Bill and Marlene Holman moved, check out the new roster for
a change of address.
Bill and Marlene Miles never did make it to Arizona, could
it have been something to do with windshield parts for an aging coach?
Our beloved Abbey went to heavenly rest on Sunday, January
20, 2008 after a short illness with kidney disease. Her kidneys shut down and
in kindness to her we agreed to have her put to sleep.
A fire at Forest City Motor Homes completely gutted Keith
and Velma Gee’s motor home. They made a
trip to Panama City Beach in Florida with their 2005 Itasca Spirit before it
was destroyed. Bill and Pat Graham lost
their coach in the same fire. Both
couples have decided not to replace their coaches.
Marilyn Beardsall now has high speed internet!
Check the
roster for new e-mail address.
Easter
Sunday, Bev Dudley fell down and broke her leg.
She broke the Tib + Fib just above the ankle of her right leg. Old bones don’t mend too well but I am on the
road to recovery.

I’m sure you all remember the drill to access the members

Motion (Sandy Rung/Bob Dudley) Reduce the New Membership Fee to fifty
dollars ($50.00) and remove the free hat for the gentlemen. Vote called and carried.
Executive Meetings:
Bob Dudley asked if the Annual Executive meeting in November could be
held at the October outing to save extra travel. The general consensus was the meeting could
be held on Thursday afternoon or evening in one of the coaches.
A man owned a small farm in
Georgia .The Georgia State Wage & Hour Department claimed he was not paying
proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him. "I need a
list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the agent.
"Well," replied the farmer, "there's my farm hand who's been
with me for 3 years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board. The cook has been here for 18
months, and I pay her $150 per week plus free room and board Then there's the half-wit who
works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week, pays
his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday
night. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally." "That's the guy I want to
talk to...the half-wit," said the agent.
"That would be
me," replied the farmer.

Tiptoe Through the Tulips
Tuesday, May 20 – Saturday, May 24,
2008
Remember that song from back in the 60’s sung by Tiny
Tim? (Check it out on the web at http://www.jacquedee63.com/tiptoe.html
to help you remember) We hope you can join
us in Ottawa in May to ‘Tiptoe
Through the Tulips’ that we hope will be blooming everywhere by then. Due
to the nearly 240 cm of snow that fell on the nation’s capital this winter we have
changed our originally planned location at a campground 25 minutes south of the
city to the Richmond Fairgrounds,
just a little southwest of the city – a 25 – 30 minute drive to downtown. Group 2 looks forward to hosting you for our
first outing of 2008.
A group bus tour is planned for Thursday to view
many sights from the bus including tulip gardens (with photo shoots, of
course), the Rideau Canal, Sussex Drive, the Governor
General’s residence, a few embassies plus a tour of Center Block at the Parliament
Buildings (we’re on the waiting list), a tour of the Royal Canadian Mint
(booked), lunch in the Byward Market area…. and
whatever else we can work in before returning to the Fairgrounds by 5 pm. Dinner will be ready for us at 6 pm in the
Dining Hall at the Fairgrounds, catered by Chef
Express.
Wednesday & Friday are available for you to do
a little touring on your own in Ottawa or in the surrounding area. A potluck
dinner on Wednesday for anybody back from sight-seeing is in the plans. Golfers
may be interested in a game Friday morning
‘Dreamers’ may be interested in a visit to the Carleton Raceway/Casino
for the races or the slots on Friday afternoon &/or evening. And, of course, the campfire will be burning
away most evenings.
Now here’s the bottom line that you’ve been
looking for:
Camping fees (15 amp, water & dump station) - $20/night
‘Tulip Fee’ (bus rental, dining hall rental for week as
needed, Thursday’s dinner, breakfasts, R C Mint entry fee) - $40/person
That will be $80
for 4 nights camping plus $80/couple for the ‘Tulip Fee’.
All funds will need to be paid by cash or
cheque.
Pre & post outing camping is welcome at the
fairgrounds at $20/night; cash or cheque only.
Driving Instructions: - #401 East to 416 North. Near Ottawa, turn West on #8 (Brophy Road), turn north on #49 (Eagleson
Rd), turn west on #10 (Perth Rd/Richmond Rd). The Fairgrounds is on your
right. Follow the OTT signs.
Please register as soon as possible (no later
than May 11th) so we can confirm numbers with the caterer. Our
‘Tulip Fee’ is based on the attendance of 20 rigs (40 people). If there are more of us you can hope for a
refund. Hopefully the converse will not be necessary.
